Skin Stress 3: Acne
If you thought spots would disappear on your 18th birthday, think again. Pimples can pop up at any time, and are increasing on twenty and thirty-something females and even on older skin. Known as “adult acne”, it’s a phenomenon said to be caused largely by the stress of modern living and requires a multi-action approach.
First up, Hobson recommends a medicated but gentle skin cleanser to reduce surface bacteria which contribute to pimple flare-ups in the first place. You’ll also need a product that will keep pores from blocking; Hobson points out that regular granular scrubs can be too abrasive, suggesting an enzyme-based exfoliant instead. A night-time lotion that works to clear congested, bumpy skin while you sleep is also good to add to your skincare routine – try Dermalogica Medicated Clearing Gel. And don’t leave moisturiser off the product checklist, just make sure it’s oil-free and marked non-comedogenic (i.e. it won’t block pores).
Consider seeing a beauty therapist to help best treat your skin and advise you on at-home care. She’ll be able to use salon-strength treatments, as well as have access to hot new technology like anti-acne light therapy treatments. If, however, you have severe acne, you should see your doctor or dermatologist to talk about prescription skincare.
