Skin Stress 6: Dehydration
If your skin drinks moisturiser like it’s going out of fashion but your complexion still looks parched, you’re not alone. “I can’t remember the last time I didn’t see dehydration on someone’s skin,” says beauty therapist Anna Field. Dehydration can afflict all skin types, even oily ones.
“Lack of moisture can occur from internal and external factors,” explains Field. “We can lose moisture through air conditioning, dry climates - and then we can lose moisture internally. When our vital organs are dehydrated, they steal moisture from everywhere. The skin is the most visible.” That explains the importance of the “one litre plus of water a day” rule.
As for skincare, Field insists on the importance of a serum added daily into a vigilant, high-quality skincare routine. “Most moisturisers don’t have high enough water content and can’t penetrate deeply enough to the level of dehydration we’re dealing with. That’s where a serum comes in.” Another essential, adds Field, is a scrub. “It allows your moisturiser to penetrate more deeply.”
